Ready to add an oil painting or two to your walls but not sure where to begin? Here are four factors to consider when you are buying oil paintings for your home.

Think About where the Painting will “Live”

Before you start browsing artwork, you need to think about where your future painting will “live.” What room will it be in? What will it add to this room? Will this painting serve a purpose? For example, you may want a painting of the seascape where the room needs opening up or some movement. Or perhaps you may want a painting of an animal to inspire conversation.

It’s also important to consider the color and style of the painting you’d like. Your painting should complement the colors in the room unless you’re going for a harsh contrast. You might not be happy if the colors in your new painting clash with your sofa!

Consider the Size

This is an important step that should not be neglected. When buying oil paintings, you need to consider the size you want and your walls need. When you pick out where your new painting will “live,” take measurements of the wall space or area. If it’s a larger area you’ll want a larger painting; a smaller area will require a smaller one. If you make the mistake of buying without measuring, you may be left with regret when it arrives. Too small, and the painting will look lost and out of place in all the empty wall space. Too large, and the painting may appear crowded in the space or won’t even fit at all. When you make sure to measure, you’ll always be left with the perfect fit.

Make Sure to Invest

When it comes to buying artwork, it’s important to invest. Oil paintings are an investment to decorate a home. This artwork is going to be living in your home for a while. You want it to look good, last long, and be unique. A framed print you buy at a home goods store might look nice, but it will likely be in many other homes around your area or even the country. Also, the quality won’t be nearly as nice and won’t last as long in your home. Buying original oil paintings are worthwhile investments that will serve you and your home in the long run.

Buy What You Love

The most important tip for buying oil paintings? Buy what you love! If you want this painting to hang on your walls for years to come, you need to be head over heels for it. That feeling is often easier talked about than felt, but you can and will find an art piece that you can’t live without. Oftentimes, you just need to look at artwork until you find one you just can’t take your eyes off of. If you’re stressed about finding an artwork you love, don’t worry. It can take time. The deep smile of knowing “this is the one” is worth the wait. It might also be helpful to know it does seem to get easier after the first purchase.
